Ziva David is a fictional character from the CBS television series NCIS, portrayed by .. Ziva, as a result, tells Gibbs that she cannot continue to work with Tony as she . She does not appear to follow Orthodox Jewish strictures, dating men who . This story also focuses on Tony DiNozzo's storyline and may make more sense to fans who aren't up to date on the show's latest developments. Are Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) and Anthony 'Tony' DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) finally back? Will they return in 'NCIS' Season 16?.
They really seemed to get that immediately, and that doesn't always happen. So I interpreted Ziva as a cool, competent woman, not the usual Hollywood sex symbol with big boobs, but [someone] who was comfortable in her own sexuality and used to working with men on an equal footing. It helped that by my looks, I could be taken for almost any nationality. They apparently attempted to reconcile at some point, though, according to Ziva, they divorced when she was 13 due to Eli's indiscretions with a female Mossad operative.
She commented in "Tribes" that her childhood best friend, a Muslim, was killed in a retaliatory Israeli air-strike when she was twelve. In my world, you grow up fast. You have no choice.
Contrary to speculation, she claims she volunteered to join Mossad as soon as she was eligible, and was not motivated by the desire to avenge the death of her sister. This unit specialized in assassinations, paramilitary operations, sabotageand psychological warfare. Her position was control officer. As a result of early, intensive training, she is very skilled in hand-to-hand combat and shooting, later attempting to teach a class on knife throwing at NCIS.
Eli is later described as Director of Mossad. Due to her relation to Ari, Ziva's appearance and eventual assignment to Gibbs' team draws fierce resentment from team member Anthony DiNozzoforensic specialist Abby Sciuto, and even from Gibbs himself when he learns that Director Shepard had assigned Ziva to his team without his knowledge. She later proves her worth in the same episode by using her training to save herself and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard from Dr.
Burns, a rogue member of the Smithsonian Anthropology Lab. This in turn causes the team to develop a new-found respect for her and sets the foundation for Ziva's strong friendship with Ducky.
In "Shalom", the fourth season premiere, she is framed by Iranian agents for the murder of two FBI officers and a suspect in their custody who was wanted for crimes against Israel. Accused of being a double agent, she becomes a fugitive and is forced to ask for help from Gibbs, who had retired from NCIS at the end of season 3 and is living in Mexico. This elicits concern from Tony and others when it becomes clear that she is "falling in love with a dying man".
Ziva assures him that she will never forget him now and, after his death, she is shown frequently wearing the orange beanie that Lt. Sanders wore when he went running. In the fifth season finale, " Judgment Day Part 2 ", Ziva's liaison position is terminated under the orders of newly appointed Director Vance following the death of Director Shepard. She returns to the team at the conclusion of the episode. Ziva, as a result, tells Gibbs that she cannot continue to work with Tony as she no longer trusts him, and Gibbs accepts this for the time being, saying that he will give her time to "remember who she can trust".
Shortly after returning to Mossad full-time, she is sent on a mission to take down a terrorist in Somalia named Saleem Ulman. She is subsequently captured and held hostage for several months. Following her rescue, she resigns from Mossad and applies to become a full-fledged NCIS agent and an American citizen.
However, it is made clear that she suffered extensive abuse and torture and it is implied that she was raped as well while in captivity.
Her probationary period officially ends in the season 9 premiere. Midway through the tenth season, Ziva's estranged father, Eli, resurfaces in the episode " Shabbat Shalom " in the hope of healing their relationship. During his time in Washington, he is also secretly meeting with a Palestinian born Iranian with an unclear connection to the Iranian government whom he knows from childhood.
Together, they hope to initiate the beginning of a peace agreement between Israel and Iran. At the end of the episode, while having a Shabbat dinner at Director Vance's house, an unknown shooter opens fire on the house, killing Eli and fatally wounding Vance's wife, who dies at the hospital.
The shooter evades capture and then kills the Iranian by triggering a bomb attached to his car. On discovering her father's body, Ziva breaks down sobbing and praying in Hebrew. Throughout the episode, both she and Vance attempt to participate in the investigation despite being prohibited due to their connections with the deceased. Bodner found out about the secret discussions between his boss and the Iranian official, and believes that David's actions could seriously threaten Israel's security.
After a failed attempt to kill Ziva, he escapes and disappears. Executive producer Gary Glasberg divulged that the plot was designed to draw out aspects of the character's personality that had been dormant for several years, saying, "People are going to see a Ziva David that they haven't seen in a long time. There is a strength and a resolute determination. Following an explosion, and the subsequent death of Secretary Clayton Jarvis, the remaining members of Gibbs' team are informed that Ziva's life is in danger.
DiNozzo travels to Israel in order to ensure her safety, and the two share a passionate kiss. In season thirteen, it is revealed that they also consummated their relationship, leading to Ziva becoming pregnant. Though DiNozzo was not informed of this, Ziva gave birth to a daughter named Tali. Although Tali is found alive, the NCIS crew are informed that Ziva is dead, though her remains are not found at the house.
Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David
Prior to the season thirteen finale, Ziva builds a strong friendship with her father's successor - Director Orli Elbaz - who later informs DiNozzo of the difficulty Ziva had faced while deciding whether to inform him of the birth of their daughter which Tony is given care of after Ziva is killed. Characterization[ edit ] I'm not trying to play her as if I hope people like my character. I'm trying to make her as three dimensional as I can. I feel people are likable and not likable and I'm trying to find all those nooks and crannies in my character.
She's not afraid of men. She takes things to the extreme. She knows how to use all sorts of things—guns and knives—I would never imagine using. She's one tough woman, but it doesn't take away from the fact that she's still very sexy and playful and all of that. But, when it comes to work she means business.
She approaches her job with zeal, appearing to truly believe in what she does. She is very committed to the ideals of the U. In spite of this, Ziva is capable of displaying playfulness, nearly childishness at times, such as in "Heartland" when she gleefully races McGee to be the first to tell Tony and Abby about meeting Gibbs' father.
She is particularly empathetic towards children, as demonstrated in episodes such as " Dagger " and "Outlaws and In-Laws". Ziva is an Israeli Jewand was always seen wearing a Star of David pendant until her capture in Somaliawhere her captor ripped it off her neck.
Shortly before her captivity, she said that she "would sooner die than take this necklace off". In the aftermath of her father's death in Season 10, she is shown praying in a synagogue, visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem, and planting an olive tree. Despite having lost friends and family to radical Islamic terrorist groups like Hamas, she does not resent Muslims in general. I put on my cargos, my T-Shirt, my microphone, my hair is usually up in a ponytail and I wear very little makeup.
Despite this, she agreed to after executive producer Shane Brennan described the scene. Costume designers wanted to show her acclimation to life in the United States and in doing so made her wardrobe less militarily influenced.
You get home and you're exhausted, but you feel like you've really worked. I hurt my neck, I hurt my groin, my pelvis and I had a couple of injuries that were really hard to deal with.
When the NCIS cast was honored by the Red Cross at the Santa Monica Red Carpet in April of that year, co-star Brian Dietzen stated that de Pablo had worked on the scene throughout the previous night until six in the morning and, as a result, was unable to attend the event. And it obviously presents a huge challenge to me because whenever they throw something else at me I just have to sort of tackle it and go with it.
I have a good ear for language and, truthfully, I picked up the language pretty fast. In "Silver War", she said she felt like a "donkey's butt" when she meant "horse's ass". Relationships[ edit ] NCIS team and colleagues[ edit ] The interactions of the NCIS team are often perceived as familial among viewers, and Cote de Pablo has commented, "I've always thought of Ziva as the adopted kid who comes in and has this really funny thing with one of the siblings, which is Tony.
Both Ducky and McGee accept her immediately, with the latter living near her and assisting her in finding the best routes to work. During the course of her hate, Abby scribbles over photographs of Ziva, deliberately mispronounces her surname, and becomes annoyed when Ziva is praised.
Ziva's relationships with her colleagues steadily improve, and she invites Gibbs, Abby, McGee, and Palmer over to her apartment for dinner in the third season. Abby, who thinks Ziva is an excellent cook, begins to soften towards her, as the latter works to earn her friendship, first by helping Abby put a bomb back together for information and later by remembering her birthday.
Abby, in turn, expresses concern when Ziva and Tony go missing in "Boxed In".
In the third season finale, the tension comes to a head, and Abby angrily tells Ziva she has no emotions, prompting both women to slap each other. By Season 4, their friendship has grown and Ziva is accepted by the rest of the team, as shown in the season's premiere " Shalom " where Tony and the rest of the team put their careers on the line and vow to prove Ziva's innocence before she is apprehended by the FBI for a crime she did not commit, knowing that their involvement could land them in prison.
By the fifth and sixth seasons, Abby and Ziva are firm friends. When Ziva first appeared, she would flinch whenever Abby would hug her; however, by Season 6, Ziva overcomes her discomfort, and now accepts and returns the hugs. Ziva's relationship with McGee develops to resemble one of a brother and sister. He and Abby both urge Ziva to repair her friendship with Tony in the aftermath of their fallout in the sixth season finale. Ziva seems to have a good relationship with Ducky.
In "Silver War", their friendship becomes more permanent when Ziva saves both of them from death at the hands of a murderer. Ducky is often seen sticking up for her when she has quarrels with Tony. She has also been seen going to him for advice and sharing a cup of tea with him. Tony's always trying to hit on women and he doesn't try to hit Ziva. Those moments they get too close they try to brush themselves off and say 'Oh, that didn't happen.
She is eventually cleared of all wrongdoing. When questioned about the effects this would have on Tony and Ziva's relationship, de Pablo commented, "Am I just being jealous? I still love him very much, but I've sort of thrown away that possibility because I think he's really struggling with some immense feelings for somebody else.
McGee is sent to cyber crimes, Ziva is returned to Israel, and Tony is deployed on an aircraft carrier. Ziva David captivity storyline Season 6 focuses more on Ziva and Tony, but leaves their relationship undefined. In the following episode, Ziva accompanies Gibbs onto the Seahawk as part of a murder investigation and notices that Tony has pictures of her in a bikini pinned up in his room. In "Nine Lives", after she plans a visit to Israel, Tony looks through her desk and finds a picture of an unidentified man Merik Tadros.
Later they both say that they are "tired of pretending": Tony about the politics in the hunt for the mole within the team, which required the team to withhold information from each other, and Ziva for reasons undisclosed.
In Januarysome were suggesting possibly making him a relative of Ziva, an idea Cote de Pablo opposed. It was also proposed that Ziva would "stop toying with [Tony] completely" which would "drive him even more insane". De Pablo relayed, "We're going to play around with the idea that it could possibly be real love, and see how [he] deals with it.
It's a triangle with very, very pointy ends. Someone's going to get hurt. Something tragic will happen to Ziva as well. Tony begins to doubt Ziva's loyalty to NCIS when she continues to defend Rivkin, and it becomes apparent by the end of Part II that she is involved in a relationship with him as the two are seen lying together in bed in the last few seconds of "Legend Part 2".
Michael Weatherly disclosed, "The way this season is ending, and what's gonna happen with Ziva and Tony and Rivkin, it's pretty massive and explosive, and it's gonna span four episodes. I'm telling you, it's not 'I hate you' [kissing sound] anger; it's 'I want to kill you' anger. Like, 'I want to shoot you in the head, but instead I'm gonna put my gun on your knee' anger….
He does something to her that is almost unforgivable. However, the reason he does it is because he truly believes it's going to help her. Little does he know that he almost kills her. In this case, we'll have opportunity to see both of those things take place.
Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David - Wikipedia
I don't want to say too much, but I think it will only make their connection stronger, as they learn a lot more about each other. Well, with the underworld of espionage, you would never really know.
They could easily have been paired and had to be in love and then had to learn to love each other The way I've always approached it is that Rivkin loves Ziva. They've always wanted to add some suspense and mystery to all of it, but I would always say to the directors, 'How could I not love her? And so does she. I'm excited to watch the finale [airing May 19] myself just to see how it all plays out! When he attempts to arrest Rivkin for killing the leader of the terrorist cell in Los Angeles and also an ICE agent which Mossad leader Eli David later reveals was an accidenta fight breaks out between the two men which eventually results in Tony being forced to shoot Rivkin in self-defense due to the fact that Rivkin is about to stab Tony with a piece of glass.
In the closing moments of the episode, she is shown to have been captured and tortured nearly beyond recognition by a terrorist demanding information on NCIS. Brennan reportedly kept the cliffhanger ending a secret from most of the cast, saying that "those pages were only in one copy of the script".
But she'll be a changed woman. In the best of ways. That personal that he comes out with, that frat boy thing -- he's hiding constantly from the truth.
It's just a big facade and she sees right through it. Upon being brought into the room to talk to him, she is shown to have been severely beaten and very weak as well as unsure of how to react at Tony's presence. Ziva asks why Tony is in Somalia, saying that he should not have come. Tony, under truth serumfirst deflects. When Ziva asks again, he replies, "I couldn't live without you, I guess.
They have to get past this trust issue, which is: He was a threat, but whether or not Tony was actually jealous, that's up to the viewers to decide! The city of light, and of love.
That's right, Ziva and Tony in Paris! You wouldn't believe it, but as if that weren't enough, their French hotel totally screws up the reservation and the two bad-ass agents end up It doesn't mean that something is going to be resolved, but it does mean that the journey may have started again. It's a long road back. When you think about what they went through, for them to resolve what happened and come to terms with that, it's a long road back. Tony in turn tells McGee that he took the couch.
Ziva asks him why he lied and he returns the question. There was much speculation on the part of fans about whether the characters might have shared more than was divulged, but Weatherly said in response, "The truth of what happened is probably something that can be discovered inside the episode itself.
If you really listen to what they say, I think it is pretty clear what happened: We haven't discussed it. But all I can say is it was good. Los Angeles, and was replaced by Gary Glasberg in He has a strong, nice-guy demeanor but—I'm quoting from the casting notice here—'there's a hint of a mystery behind his smile.
Tony cares about Ziva and wants to make sure she's not mixed up with the wrong kind of guy, so he's going to be watchful and protective of her. We kept it light and we kept it fun, and we kept it like two people who are genuinely in to each other and wanting to move things along.
It's about what's going on between the lines. These two people are touchy-feely, and that's different for Ziva. We'll see what the audience thinks, but for me, he feels potential and possibility in a way that he hasn't for years.
EJ is a mirror, so he sees that hope for himself again.
She has her eccentricities as well, which makes her adorable to Tony and highly irritating to Ziva. She is a team leader, having accepted the assignment in Rota, Spain that Tony had turned down several years prior. Ziva abruptly ends their relationship after learning that he had lied to her directly about his reasoning for being in Washington, D. When EJ assures him that they will find Ziva, he replies that "it's just different for some of us".
EJ takes an extended leave of absence with the conclusion of the season, ending her affair with Tony. Ziva and Ray repair their relationship somewhat, and he gives her an empty ring box as a "promise" before leaving for a long-term assignment.
Glasberg commented, "Ziva and Ray are a little open-ended at the moment. There isn't any closure to it. We'll have to see where it leads, but I think he was pretty clear that he has a job to do at the moment, and that's gonna be the primary focus for him. After a fallout with Tony, she tells him that Ziva respects him and cares about him. He at first deflects but then says, "Surround yourself with people you would give your own life for.
He's protective of her and cares about her and has feelings for her, and, at the end of the day, wants to make sure that she's safe and happy with the direction of her life. Season X and the Year of Tiva and an emotional farewell[ edit ] They've been through extraordinary circumstances together, so it doesn't necessarily require the explosion.
There's a real, plain-spoken, straight read between them, so they don't have to jump through hoops. When she watches Tony does his stuff or he watches her hide behind that barricade of an Israeli assassin princess mentality, they both clock it, they know it and they can move around each other. It's a great relationship. Tony and Ziva, feeling bad about missing Jimmy and Breena's wedding, try to cheer each other up by joking about how awful weddings are—an exchange that begins to take on meaning when they become wistful about "the vow, the ring, the kiss, the ketubah Later, when the Navy Yard is seconds from exploding, Ziva refuses to leave the building without Tony.
The bomb goes off while they are still in the elevator; Ziva and Tony fall to the ground, with Tony's arm around her waist, and their free hands clasped tightly as the elevator appears to crash.
This is the year. I've had years in which I thought, 'Oh my God, this a Tiva year,' and there have been years he thought were Tiva years…. The truth is, we have yet to find out where that storyline is going to go. I think they're toying around with us like they always do. Weatherly stated, "She was really the beginning of his love for movies and why that is such a deep, penetrating part of who he is.
The last gift she gave him was to turn to the movies as a moral compass. It's a profound, soft, vulnerable moment.
